History of the Brilliant Cut Diamond
Diamonds became popular as ornaments in jewelry in the 1400's and the different techniques and styles of diamond cuts such as the Brilliant Cut Diamond were gradually developed over many years. The Brilliant cut is one of the most favourable form for enhancing the play of colour, and is therefore most effective for all Precious and most of the Semi-Precious Stones. Lodewyk (Louis) van Berquem of Brugge, Belgium who in 1458 created the first cut diamonds.  Louis van Berquem invented a diamond polishing wheel called a scaif which enabled him to cut the facets of a diamond. He also introduced the concept of using absolute symmetry in the placement of facets on the stone. Cardinal Jules Mazarin (1602 – 1661) serving the French King Louis XIV, collected diamonds from Catherine the Great and is credited with the first 'Brilliant cut' diamonds, which were called Mazarins (Double-Cut Brilliants).

The art of cutting brilliant diamonds was further developed by Vincenzio Peruzzi, of Venice ; a city which was, in his time of the late 1600's, the chief seat of the Diamond trade. Vincent Peruzzi, a Venetian diamond polisher, introduced the "Triple-Cut Brilliant" or "Peruzzi Cut" by doubling the number of crown facets from 17 to 33. Double-Cut Brilliants (Mazarins) and Triple-Cut Brilliants (Peruzzi Cuts)
were cushion cuts (squares or rectangles with rounded corners). These cushion-cut brilliants are known today as "Old Mine Cuts." The advancement in cutting tools in the early 1900's led to modern diamond cuts including the round brilliant cut. For Additional facts and information click the following links:
